SILAIRA Sleep Journal · Field Note 01
A seven-point carry-on checklist for planes, hotels, and unfamiliar pillows.
Travel changes the setting, but a sleep mask still needs to be understood as a complete product—not by one material word or marketing phrase.
Travel well · choose clearlyFor a long-haul flight, check light coverage around your nose, contact around your eyes and temples, strap placement against the headrest or travel pillow, packed shape, and the care routine for the exact mask.
Silk content alone cannot establish fit, complete blackout, or comfort throughout a flight.
The carry-on checklist
Travel changes the setting—not the questions.
On a plane, in a hotel, or against a different pillow, the mask still has to meet your face, pack sensibly, and remain realistic to care for. No single fabric weight or fiber name can establish all of that.
Seven checks before you pack
Read the whole product.
Check every surface that touches you.
Look for a clear fiber statement and identify which parts of the mask use the stated material: face-facing surface, outer surface, filling, trim, and hardware.
Compare fit and coverage.
Dimensions help comparison, but nose shape, head size, sleeping position, and pillow prevent a universal fit or complete-darkness promise.
Look at the edge profile.
If you sleep on your side, inspect where the edge and seam meet your temple and pillow.
Understand the strap tradeoff.
Adjustable straps offer tension control but may add hardware. Fixed elastic removes manual adjustment and slider hardware, but its tension cannot be customized.
Check how it packs.
Avoid sharp folds, rough fasteners, leaking toiletries, and unnecessary pressure. A storage pouch protects the mask; it does not prove performance.
Read the care instructions first.
A finished mask may need different care from flat silk fabric. Make sure the product-specific routine is realistic while away from home.
Separate specifications from promises.
Momme, fiber, construction, fit, light reduction, and care describe different things. One specification does not prove the rest.
Try the fit before you pack
Try the mask in the position you expect to rest in, using your travel pillow if you have one. Check for distracting light around the nose, unwanted pressure at the eyes or temples, and where the strap meets the pillow or headrest. A front-facing product photo cannot show how the mask will fit your own face in that position.
One mask · three settings
What changes along the route?
Keep it accessible.
Check coverage, strap design, and how the edge meets the seat or travel pillow. Do not compress it at the bottom of a bag.
Expect unfamiliar light.
A mask may help reduce distracting light, but the result still depends on the full construction and individual fit.
Different pillow, different pressure.
Inspect edge profile and seam placement instead of assuming a soft-looking photograph predicts the experience.
SILAIRA Ensō · Confirmed details
Specifications, stated plainly.
22 Momme mulberry silk on both outer surfaces, including the face-facing side, with 100% mulberry silk filling.
These details are not a universal-fit or complete-blackout promise.
- 20.5 × 9 cm (approximately 8.1 × 3.5 in)
- Approximately 28 g
- Fixed elastic strap; not manually adjustable
- Mask, storage pouch, and instruction card
These specifications describe the regular SILAIRA 22 Momme mask with a fixed elastic strap, not the weighted model. The listed 28 g is the mask’s net weight, not the weight of a complete packed travel kit. Product dimensions are not packed-pouch dimensions, and neither measurement guarantees an individual fit.
A practical packing routine
Pack gently. Keep it useful.
- Make sure the mask is clean and fully dry.
- Place it flat or in a gentle curve rather than sharply folding it.
- Use the storage pouch to separate it from rough or leaking items.
- Keep it accessible during the journey.
- After travel, follow the product-specific care instructions before storing it again.
Frequently asked questions
Travel sleep mask questions.
Is silk automatically the best material for travel?
No material word establishes the whole experience. Compare surfaces, filling, fit, coverage, strap, care, and evidence.
Does 22 Momme mean complete blackout?
No. Momme describes silk fabric weight. Light reduction depends on the complete construction and individual fit.
Is an adjustable strap always better?
It offers more tension control. Fixed elastic avoids manual adjustment and slider hardware. Neither is universally best.
Should I fold a silk sleep mask into a small pocket?
Avoid sharp folds and pressure that may create persistent creases. Pack it flat or in a gentle curve.
Can I use a hotel washing machine?
Use a washing machine only when the instructions for your exact mask allow it. For the regular SILAIRA 22 Momme mask, use cold hand washing and natural air drying; do not machine wash, bleach, wring, or tumble dry. If you have a weighted mask, follow its own care instructions rather than borrowing this routine.
